EDGAR ALLAN POE The Raven 1st Day Cover 1949 Edgar Allan Poe Stamp..... On October 7, 1949, the USPS issued a stamp to honor Edgar Allan Poe on the 100th Anniversary of his death. Shown here is a genuine First Day Cover , an envelope with the new Edgar Allan Poe stamp, featuring a portrait of Poe, c ancelled from the city of issue (Richmond, VA - where he was raised) on the first day of issue captioned above. The cachet (artwork on the envelope) shows a portrait of Poe, a cat on his shoulder, an ink well, handwritten pages, and a copy of 'The Raven.' The most defining feature is that the cachet is printed in three colors in addition to black and white - very rare for the 1940's.
